AAPI Heritage Month – Pan Asian Celebration

Thursday, May 30
11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Sekach Building, 6505 Sylvania Ave.
$10 per person, limited space available

Join Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo staff members Sherry Majewski, Hannah Loeser, and Mary Bilyeu and celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. AAPI Heritage Month has very special significance for these three ladies - Hannah’s mom immigrated from China, Sherry adopted all eight of her daughters from China, and Mary’s daughter-in-law was born and raised in the Philippines.

This fun and festive program will include a brief history of Jewish experiences in Asia, information about loved ones and their Asian heritages, and – of course! – a delicious Pan-Asian lunch and treats. Hannah’s mom, Demi, will also teach us how to make vegetarian dumplings to cook at home.

SOLD OUT

An evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times best-selling author, Emily Nussbaum from The New Yorker

Wednesday, July 10
7 p.m.
Lourdes Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd.
$10 per person; a FREE, signed copy of Emily’s new book will be given to the first 50 registrants. Additional copies will be available for purchase at the event.

Who invented reality television, the world’s most dangerous pop-culture genre? And why can’t we look away from shows like The Bachelor and Survivor? Award-winning, New York Times best-selling author Emily Nussbaum will talk about her revelatory new book Cue the Sun! that explores the rise of the “dirty documentary,” from its contentious roots in radio to the ascent of Donald Trump. Emily will share stories of the real characters who built the reality genre and explore the morally charged, funny, and sometimes tragic consequences of the hunt for something real inside something fake.

Emily Nussbaum is a staff writer at The New Yorker, where she’s worked since 2011, originally as the magazine’s television critic. In 2016, she won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. Previously, she was the culture editor for New York, where she created the Approval Matrix. She is the author of I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution, which was a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Clive Thompson, and their two children.

The author’s presentation and Q&A will be followed by a book signing.

Register by Tuesday, July 9 here or with Sherry Majewski at 419-724-0351 or sherry@jewishtoledo.org
